Argentina, with its vibrant cities and breathtaking landscapes, offers an unforgettable travel experience. In this 7-day itinerary, I’ll dive into how to admire the beauty of Patagonia and wander the charming streets of Buenos Aires. To make the most of your trip, we recommend starting with physically demanding activities in Patagonia and ending with a more relaxed pace in Buenos Aires.
Day 1: Perito Moreno Glacier Mini Trekking and Observation Deck

Begin your adventure with a visit to the awe-inspiring Perito Moreno Glacier. Fly from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, the nearest town to the glacier, the previous day. Then embark on a full-day bucket list experience for activities in the glacier. As these activities are extremely popular, I recommend booking in advance on Get Your Guide to guarantee your spot. Experience the thrill of mini-trekking on the glacier and marvel at its grandeur from the observation deck (the Pasarelas). If you’re interested in the mini-trekking, make sure you book in advance as it tends to sell out quickly.
Day 2: Journey to El Chaltén and Small Trekking
Travel by bus from El Calafate to El Chaltén, the trekking capital of Argentina. The most famous trek is Laguna de Los Tres, but this one is best to start early in the morning as it is a full-day trek. There are other small trails you can explore, and a variety of activities you can do in the city including kayaking, horseback riding, bike tours, rafting and more.
Day 3: Laguna de los Tres Trekking
Have an early start to tackle Patagonia’s most iconic trek: Laguna de los Tres. The full trek takes approximately 9 hours to complete, with the most challenging part being the last 2 km uphill. It culminates in a breathtaking view of the majestic Mount Fitz Roy reflected in the tranquil waters of Laguna de los Tres. Prepare for a scenic journey through lush forests and crystal-clear streams, with a dramatic backdrop of the towering peaks of Mount Fitz Roy.
Day 4: Return to El Calafate and Fly to Buenos Aires
Travel back to El Calafate by bus and catch a flight to Buenos Aires. Take this day as a travel day to recover from the outdoor adventures and prepare for the vibrant city experience ahead.
Day 5: Buenos Aires City Center and Puerto Madero
Explore the bustling city centre of Buenos Aires, including iconic landmarks like the Obelisk and Teatro Colón in Avenida 9 de Julio. Wander through Plaza de Mayo and marvel at the famous Casa Rosada. Continue your journey to Puerto Madero, a trendy waterfront district known for its modern skyscrapers, lively restaurants, and scenic promenades. There, you can enjoy an asado – traditional Argentinian BBQ.
Day 6: Recoleta and Tango Show Dinner
Discover the affluent neighbourhood of Recoleta, home to grand mansions and the famous Recoleta Cemetery. Join a guided tour to learn about the cemetery’s fascinating history. After that, explore the Recoleta Cultural Centre which hosts free art exhibitions. This is a nice neighbourhood to wander around, and while you’re at it, stop at the beautiful El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookshop.
In the evening, immerse yourself in the passion and rhythm of Argentine tango with a dinner show experience.
Day 7: Café Tortoni and La Boca
Start your day with breakfast at Café Tortoni, a historic café that has been a beloved cultural institution for over a century. Here, treat yourself to traditional pastries like a medialuna or an alfajor.
Then, venture to the vibrant neighbourhood of La Boca, known for its colourful houses and lively street art. Explore the area on a walking tour and try quick bites like choripan or empanadas. If you have time many restaurants also have tango dancers performing, so you can enjoy these rhythms while savouring local dishes.
If you have time, consider extending your trip to other parts of Patagonia, like Bariloche or Ushuaia, or visiting the majestic Iguazu Falls.
I left Argentina with a heart full. I was so happy to have had the opportunity to spend amazing days in the outdoors and I was in complete awe at the magnitude and beauty of the mountains and the glacier. I also had the best time in Buenos Aires, learning more about the history of a country that I knew so little about. I want to be back in the part of the world and see the Chilean Patagonia next. Who will join me on this adventure?
